The ASA Professionalization and Career Training (PACT) Workshop is co-sponsored by the ASA Emerging Scholars Network (ESN) and is an immersive, one-day workshop held prior to the ASA Annual Meeting. This year’s workshop is designed to equip emerging scholars — graduate students and early career professionals — with the skills needed to effectively share their research through podcasting and social media.

8:45-9:00: Welcome
An official welcome and schedule review.
9:00am-10:30am: Sharing Your Research with the Public + Q&A
Scholars with public facing media (podcast, blogs, youtube, etc.) will share their expertise on how to frame and discuss research in an entertaining way for specialist and non-specialist audiences online. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions.

10:30am-10:45am: Break
10:45am -12:00pm: Pairs/Small Group Workshopping
Participants will meet in small topical groups or pairs to workshop different angles and approaches for discussing research for a podcast format. Each group will spend some time familiarizing themselves with each person’s work and developing a few questions they believe will highlight important information for specialist and non-specialists alike.
12:00am-1:30pm: Lunch
1:30pm-5:00pm: Practice & Recordings
Groups will reconvene to practice and develop a group style and conversational approach. Participants will have the remainder of the workshop time to record on professional equipment. All recordings will then be edited and published on the ASA podcast ASAPOD, which participants can then add to their CV.
